This weeks flowers 22/07/2011

One of my favourite flowering bulbs is the iris. They are best known in their deep blue colour but also grow in yellow and white. The white iris is a strong symbol of Florence as they grew in thick carpets inside the city wall. In another beautiful European city, the yellow iris is the symbol of Brussels. There was an island (until it was built over in the late 1800’s)in the middle of the Senne river in Brussels that was covered in yellow iris and the flower has retained an important place in the city’s identity. So for Florence, Brussels and all beautiful cities, the seasonal bunch this week will be iris – bunches will be either blue, yellow or white. As the blossom begins to appear on fruit trees, flowering branches are mixed with lilies this week as the $40 bunch and the $30 bunch will be 10 stems of large headed roses.
