the peony comes into season. The peony is renowned for its large, often perfumed flowers and has been prized for centuries by flower lovers. A native of Asia, Europe and America, they are believed to have originated in the hard winter areas of Tibet, Western China, Siberia and Mongolia. Imported from growers down South, we have a short but sweet window of opportunity to enjoy these beautiful blooms.
They are one of the longest used symbols in ornamental culture with significance as an official flower of Japanese and Chinese dynasties. In modern design, the fabulous full-blown flower has also enjoyed a resurgence in fabric and wallpaper designs.
They brought back London memories for my Brisbane-born friend who in her pre-children life was the merchandiser and stylist for Ralph Lauren in Bond St. She would always buy them for the store as their full rich flowers fill a vase. The photos on today's post were some of the arrangements I did for La la Latrobe in a past November. We love how Anna Spiro has displayed them on her entrance table at Black & Spiro today. Recutting the stems and frequent changes of water are imperative. And we mentioned those arctic temperatures they love - it would mean that a cool position away from draughts is essential to ensure you have the longest possible time to enjoy them.
We hope your love for peonies is as enduring as their history.
